Wearing Yellow–It’s Tricky for Most of Us!

wearing yellow

Wearing yellow for all of us is tricky–at least it is for me. It has to be the exact yellow for most people. My yellow has to have more white in it; I can’t wear mustard or an orangey yellow. It’s got to be clear and bright like canary yellow, and even then it may not work unless I have a bit of color on my face. I declare that many of us would like to wear yellow, right? But against our faces, that yellow can turn us ill in a millisecond. Therefore, my solution for wearing yellow is to find it for my bottom half–like these yellow trousers. The yellow is very far away from my face, and I chose to pair it with a color that does work well with me, sweatshirt grey.

I used to have the perfect yellow top. It was that yellow I was referring to–my yellow, the yellow that looks good on me. It didn’t wash me out in the least. I can remember I bought it at a super market in San Salvador–a super market of all places. It fit me perfectly too with little cap sleeves and a keyhole at the collar. Also, both the sleeves’ hem, collar, and keyhole all were piped in white. Oh, it was such a cute shirt! Why, oh why did I get rid of it? It was made of polyester; maybe that was why. I still haven’t found a replacement though for that perfect yellow tee….

  1. After my mom passed away and I went through her closet trying to decide what to donate and what to keep I discovered that my mom was the proud owner of about 15 yellow t-shirts. Let’s face it, this is a bright and happy color! BUT, it really is difficult to wear and you’re absolutely right about finding that perfect yellow that works.
I love the yellow pants and I solved my own yellow problem in this same way! I do think it looks good with a lot of different colors so from that perspective they’re a good investment too!
How are you feeling these days Annie? It’s been awhile since you mentioned your slowly improving hip and knee. I’m hoping that some of the pain is behind you forever. You’ve certainly been living actively and enjoying travel opportunities that are the BEST form of rehab!!

    1. Your mom was lucky! My grandmother with her olive undertones could wear yellow. My mom however got more Irish in her from her father. Out of my siblings, I’d say my sister Mary is the only one who got those olive undertones, and she even has some yellow in her eyes.

Stay tuned for this Monday….more yellow! And I think for next Friday I may write about some ways to incorporate this fantastic but difficult color.

So, ya, I don’t talk much about my health. You know me: always the optimist. I’m usually in some pain these days either in my left knee (that needs replacing but I’m holding out for as long as I can) or my lower right back that has problems. I try to stand as tall as possible, trying to create a strong core. Anyway, thank God my hip feels fine, but I’d be lying if I said I was pain free. So, I just choose to ignore it. Thankfully my mental health is stable, so I am not in a state of depression over the chronic pain I always feel. I do need to lose some weight. Real bad. I know that contributes to pain issues. Not being able to exercise makes losing weight very difficult. And I need to be better about what I put in my mouth. It’s all a vicious cycle: I eat emotionally too often.

So, there’s some honesty for you. I will always be honest, but I don’t often share the bad stuff over here! I’m a half FULL kinda gal!! 😀

But thank you for asking!! You are always so kind and supportive to me.

      Love, Annie

      1. You just keep being positive Annie. I’m so impressed that you continue to be hopeful and able to ignore the pain and continue moving forward. In reality tha that is such a healthy choice!
Have you thought about investing in a stationary bike (used)? I think they’re less stressful for the hip and knee…? Good way to burn calories!

  2. Such cute yellow pants. I like yellow with gray – something I’ve never thought of. I like a deeper more mustard yellow on me. It’s one of my husband’s fav colors.

    1. With your coloring, I bet it looks fantastic. My grandmother could totally wear yellow–any shade! She had olive undertones just like you. I promise to find that picture of her that reminds me of you this summer while I’m home, k?

That’s cool that you can wear your husband’s favorite color! Love, Annie

      1. I’d love to see her picture! I read some of your responses to others and I so relate to what you say. I’m a half full girl too! Always the optimist!

  3. Hey, my ‘yellow’ is more golden than white, but yes, I find it tricky too. did you talk about the earrings? I love them, I wonder where I can find similar ones! grts, Barbara

    1. Oh, my STAR earrings! I picked these up at H&M this winter–no wait fall. They still might be available on certain sale racks. They’re fun earrings, and the metal is a dull gold so I thought they’d they pair well with the grey. Plus, I’ve got the stars in my shoes! Haha. Any chance to go matchy matchy and I’m there!

The color of my trousers would look good on you then. I can’t wear this color next to my face. Stay tuned for next Monday when I wear a yellow sequin dress! And then next Friday I plan to show some ways to incorporate yellow for those who can’t wear the color at all.

I’m so glad you stopped by!

      Love, Ann

  4. What a fantastic combination, yellow and grey, in fact I love everything about this outfit. My yellows have to be warm, mustard and ochre are best on my Autumn-toned complexion but I do have a yellow jumper the exact colour of custard that I love, and I can get away with it if I pair it with, say, bright orange (my favourite of all colours). I agree it is so tricky to get the right yellow, particularly in the absence of any suntan, as it can range from a very cold to a very hot colour can’t it? Fun experimenting with it though!

    1. If, IF, I wear yellow near my face, you can guarantee I’ve used a tan towel that day! You’re so lucky to be able to wear the mustard tones of yellow. That’s the one that makes me look sick! Hahah!

Stay tuned for next Monday and Friday when I wear a yellow sequin dress (Yes! You read that right!!) and show ways to incorporate yellow for those who can’t wear the color at all.

Thanks for stopping by! Love, Ann

    1. I miss thrift stores so much Jodie. It’s the first place I go when I get home for the summer. Wait, I first go to Target if I’m being honest!! Hahaha. I love Targé!! But yes to all the yellows at a thrift shop. I can’t wait. And I’m wondering where those yellow cutoffs I got last summer from Value Village are…..Hmmm.

      Thanks for stopping by Jodie!

      Love, Annie

  5. I’m one of the luck ones, Annie! The weird thing is, when I was younger, I hated wearing yellow. I just thought it looked awful on me, but as I got older I started to love it. Now it’s one off my favourite colours to wear in the summer (let’s face it, it always looks better with a tan!). You look fab! I do love those trousers with the grey top. I need to find me a good pair of yellow trousers!

    1. Yes, with your stunning eyes I can just imagine how well you rock yellow! I bet your eyes turn even more beautiful next to that color. And yes, I have to pull out a tan towel if I’m going to wear this color next to my face. Stay tuned! Wink wink!!

  6. I really like yellow, but most shades of yellow make me look washed up!, I also prefer canary yellow, the brighter, the better, but I’m going to keep it far away from my face (such a great advice!)
I love this grey&yellow color combo, and your cute sneakers and backpack!
    besos
