The Fab 40s in Ruffles

Jenny from A Pocketful of Polka Dots called ruffles this month. At first I was like, “Meh. I’m not such a ruffle girl.” But then I realized if I took a look in my wardrobe, it’s actually filled with ruffles. I had a laugh at myself!! There were so many options from a ruffle unitard, a one shoulder ruffle denim dress, or my fun Who What Wear romper from Target. I went with the polka dot flirty number. I’ve worn it so many times: in Suncadia for my in-laws 50th wedding anniversary, for my sister’s baby shower, and for a meet-up with an annual lunch with two very good high school friends. This little outfit makes me feel dressed up but casual at the same time. It has ruffles on the sleeves and on the shorts. The wrap part goes to the perfect point of my décolletage while not showing too much. Finally, the icing on the top is being able to not wear tennis shoes with this number. It’s been a long time coming, but this summer I’ve been able to venture and return to the world of sandals and flats. Ahhhh, it feels so good to wear something other than tennis shoes! (Granted my tennis shoe collection continues to grow!) And it also feels good to wear ruffles. I guess I’m more of a ruffle girl than I knew!

Cover-Up: Ping Pong Post No. 5

I was so happy when Anna called a cover-up for July’s Ping Pong Piece; it’s pretty much all you’ll find me in this summer out at Spirit Lake. Although my version of a cover-up is a little different: it’s a very old white fisherman sweater. It’s been a very breezy summer, so while I am in a suit, I need something to keep me a little bit warm–especially if we go out in the boat. To me a cover-up is usually white. I am not sure why, but I usually gravitate towards a white sweater or sweatshirt, white men’s shirt, or white, lacy number. Once you’ll see down below, a couple of my friends agree….

Anna from Anna’s Island Style

Anna mentioned her age somewhere recently–it might have been on an Instagram image…yep here it is! I don’t know why but I am surprised Anna is 59. She’s so lithe and fit and I’m going to go ahead and say it, very sexy in her bikini and Marilyn Monroe-esque dress. It’s such a fun and flirty cover-up, in white! And, the best part about it is she picked up this ASOS number for only $5 at a thrift shop. Score!!

Mary Murnane

Anna invited Mary Murnane this month. I’m always enamoured by how classy Mary is. She’s just the epitome of classy chic. Her style is so tailored and basically, well suited! It was this post of Mary’s when I fell in love with her. I’ve always wanted to just wear a blazer–with nothing underneath. I still haven’t been able to master this look but it is definitely on my sartorial bucket list. Here Mary surprised me: she’s still very class of course, but she’s also quite angelic, don’t you think!?

Samantha from Fake Fabulous

I can totally relate to Sam’s cover-up here. While yes, I am experiencing warmer weather out at Spirit Lake, the moment I hit the Pacific Coast, out come all my layers. Layers on a 20 degrees Celsius beach are absolutely necessary. Of course we can always count on Samantha to be bright and cheery in any circumstance. It’s just her way! And I love it!!

And me, Kremb de la Kremb

If by chance it gets hot enough for me to shed the sweater, I’ll then replace the upper cover-up with a bottom one, and it’s usually a pair of my cut-offs. Ever since I was a preteen heading to the lake with my family, I’ve always maintained that something should be covered–either my top half or my bottom half. It’s been my suit wearing habit for as long as I can remember.

What’s your favorite type of cover-up?

A Ginham Top–Shopping with Debbie

Debbie, from Fashion Fairy Dust, and I have been shopping again! This time I let her know that I’d been wanting a black and white gingham top. So just like last month, we went to Instagram and sent direct messages back and forth of items we liked. It’s amazing all that we can do in the palm of our hands these days! Since I’m in the States for the summer we also were not limited to global shipping which meant we could shop at one of our (similar) all times faves: Targé!! It was kismet; the moment I sent her this pic, she agreed whole heartedly that it was the piece. What’s so amazing is how there are many subtle similarities with both of our stylings. See if you can find them….

Debbie from Fashion Fairy Dust

The only thing that Debbie and I verbally agree on is the piece to buy. Then, after we’ve shot our looks we send out two pictures to one another. I’ve called Debbie my style sister before, and now there is evidence as to why: she paired the top with distressed denim and red just like me. I love the touch of red in her scarf and those cute cherry shoes. Plus that studded black belt–well, I’ve been looking for something similar! Plus her jeans are perfectly distressed. I could totally see myself wearing this exact outfit. Can’t you?

I met Debbie via Instagram. Follow her here: @fashionfairydust
and read her blog here: Fashion Fairy Dust.

Since I knew I also wanted to pair this top with red, I headed to my favorite thrift store of all time: Value Village on Boone in Spokane, Washington. I went into the store with the thought of either red jean cut offs or a red denim skirt cut off. Value Village did not fail me; I instantly found a pair of poppy red jeans in one of my favorite labels to cut off. If you are ever at a thrift store and you find a pair of Gloria Vanderbelt jeans, buy them! They make the perfect pair of cut offs. I’m not kidding. I have Gloria Vanderbelt cut off jean shorts and cut off hemmed jeans both in white. They are my favorite. She adds the perfect amount of stretch to her denim. I’d also like to note something special about the way I style this top: I’m not wearing tennis shoes!! I found a very comfortable black satin bow slides at Forever 21, and I am so excited that they work for me. (These cute slides also come in a pretty pale pink or a bold marigold yellow.) Finally, this kitschy bag is new to me as well. I just couldn’t resist it (nor the price) on Shein.

Would you like to go shopping with Debbie and me? Let us know.
Also, how would you style this black and white gingham top?
