Packing 101: Overnight [at the Auberge]

packingovernight4
Packing can be tricky. My mom is the absolute master at packing, so along the way I’ve taken note. (She’s actually amazing to watch in action!) Plus, as a family we’ve been on the move for many years, so there are some parts of packing that I have become good at. Recently on an overnight trip, each of us was allowed one backpack each. I brought my small black backpack only. I managed to fit in quite a bit, so I thought I’d share a few tips on how I did this.

Tip #1: Choose a color scheme.
For this overnight trip, I went with the color blue. On the way there, I wore a sundress with red and blue accents. For a purse I chose a fairly large red carry all, that could include any extras like a phone charger for example. I thought about what kind of clothes I would need while away: swimsuit and cover-up, a comfy outfit for after swimming, and another outfit for the way back. By basing everything around the color blue, this limited the accessories and shoes I needed to bring. The only area I deviated away from blue was with my swimsuit and cover-up. While traveling I tend to stick to black for swimwear. It’s a classy staple. One can never go wrong with a black swimsuit–it’s a color (or lack there of) that looks good on everyone.

Tip #2: Pack a bag inside a bag.
I knew I’d want to bring a bag with me down to the pool filled with my book, sunscreen, and a bottle of water. I also needed to bring along a few toiletries. Rather than stuff my toiletries into a toiletry bag, I used a beach bag for this. Upon arrival to the hotel room, I unpacked all my toiletries freeing up my beach bag. Presto, with my black cover-up, I added a bit of color to my black poolside look with this colorful Indian bag.

Tip #3: Pack light in the toiletry department.
Because you can count on pretty decent toiletry essentials at most hotels, there’s really no need to pack a bunch. I threw three of my favorite, long lasting lip stains into my purse. Since blue was already my main color scheme for clothes, it also became the color scheme for my makeup; I brought along both a navy blue eyeliner and mascara. I knew I wouldn’t need to worry about soap or conditioner (I no longer actually use shampoo–there’s another post there, don’t worry!), so I only packed a brush, deodorant, and of course sunscreen. All of these items easily fit into the beach bag I’d later use for the pool.
