Camping in Hong Kong

Over our spring break holiday we went camping in Hong Kong. Wow! It was so fun, super relaxing, just a bit adventurous, and extremely beautiful. Hong Kong is known for being a bustling city–which by all means it is. Yet, there’s such a majestic, natural beauty to the area that many don’t know about. Let me prove those assumptions wrong!

We went to Ham Tin Beach in Sai Kung in the New Territories. (I get it a kick out of calling it the Hamptons!) The beaches out in Sai Kung are found to have a soft, fine, white sand. The terrain is mountainous filled with tons of hiking trails and dramatic rocky coastlines. It’s all quite forested with glorious palm trees mixed in. This particular beach had a sort of vine like grass where we camped that covered the ground, and the trees up above were shedding these cute little almond sized pine cones. Here is something both odd and hilarious: cows roam the beaches. Not so hilarious are the boars that come out at night; we were literally three feet away from a very large boar. Luckily, we scared him off.

Imagine me jumping here. This is my version of a happy jump! These two nights and three days away from the hustle and bustle of Hong Kong were so freeing. There was no mobile service, so all of us had to automatically disconnect from our phones. We found a campsite within the shade, so we had coverage under the sun. The weather was lovely–not too hot during the day and fresh at night. By the campfire at night we played word games; no scary stories were allowed–especially with wild boars roaming around!

This was my little kitchen: we brought a cooler, small little cutting board, small knife, and a sponge with a small travel size of dishwashing liquid. We were glamping, so you may notice a box of wine in the crotch of the tree! We had a speaker for the kids to play tunes and a hammock for chilling in the shade. Yes, we were very comfortable; although next time we’re bringing sleeping mats–the sand was so hard and surprisingly uncomfortable.

Directions for Camping in Hong Kong:

  • First get to Sai Kung in the New Territories.
  • Once in Sai Kung the amount of beaches is endless. There are tons of options for campsites. We chose Ham Tin (and I lovingly referred to it as our HK Hamptons!)
  • Ask for Judi or Allison. They’ll set you up with a boat ride to the beach. Or call ahead: +852 9800 3601.
  • Alternatively, if you are super adventurous and more ably fit, you can hike in to any of these beach campsites.
  • We stocked up on supplies at Decathalon, a great sporting goods store that is now in Hong Kong. There’s a branch in Causeway Bay and in Mong Kok–both are incredibly busy and cramped. You have been forewarned!
  • Enjoy!

As a side note from Kevin and my personal love story, we fell in love on the top of a volcano in Stromboli, Italy. The volcano explodes every 15 minutes or so–just like our hearts. (Cheesy but true!!) We were camping up there on the mountain with four other guys; I was the only gal–because Kevin was there, and I wanted to be with him. We kissed a lot that night! (Yes, that’s not too much information, but it’s the truth!) It was on Arpil 14th, a Tuesday to be exact, after that weekend in 1993, that we met on a corner by our school in Florence, Italy. It was a brief meeting, and he kissed me quickly as we said a hello/goodbye. He walked away thinking to himself, “I’ve got a girlfriend!” We were connected from that weekend onward having camping be one of the spark to a love that’s lasted since that night of fire on the mountain! (And, yes, we sang that song a bunch that evening!)
