Style Stories No. 11: My Love of Red and Black

Black and Red 8.5

Pictures thanks to I’m a Norbyah

Do you have a color combo that reminds you of a childhood memory? For me, it’s black and red. I can’t remember what year it was–maybe 4th grade, but there was one outfit for a school picture that definitely sticks out in my mind. I was so impressed by what I was wearing and can remember feeling special all day long, despite the fact that what I was wearing was definitely out of the ordinary. In fact, perhaps this was the start of my over-the-top-ness! My mom totally dressed me, but I was definitely into it. Imagine this getup: black loafers with white knee highs, black tailored bermuda shorts, a white collared button down, and finally a black and red tie. Oh! I felt so snazzy! Ever since, I’ve always been drawn to wearing black and red together, hence the inspiration for this outfit.

But first, my favorites from Style Stories No. 10….

Johanna2

I did not mean to pick black and red favorites from the Style Stories Link Up from two weeks ago. Honestly, it is purely coincidental. I’m serious! It just so happened that I was particularly attracted to Johanna’s black top–probably because it’s a blouse that I’d never be able to wear. I did however immediately go buy some red trousers after seeing this post! See?

Grettje2

Then in terms of a style story teller I always, I mean always love Greetje’s posts. She and her husband are forever up to such fun. He takes very charming pictures of his wife, and well Greetje’s style is so great. She’s one of those lucky ladies with #legsfordays!

Your turn!

  1. It is one of my favourite combinations as well. I could have linked a lot of posts to your link-up, but I did only one. I will link back in my new post, not in the one I uploaded to the link.
And thank you so much for your kind words. I am blushing here.

    1. Oooh ! Awesome school colors! You know, some schools get the good ones. Yesterday I wore maroon and grey together–an excellent color combo, but I felt like a traitor. Those are my university rival’s colors (WSU). My own uni, U of W with purple and gold (huh!?), are not so appealing in an everyday #ootd! I don’t think you’d ever find me wearing purple and yellow!

      School memories…all good! A x

  2. Great style story! I love that you still remember how wonderful you felt because of the outfit you wore!

Red and black is a great combination and looks great on you! I love the fun skirt!

    1. Thank you Andrea! And yes, I love feeling great in clothes–otherwise I’ll have none of it! Helps me determine what goes in and stays in and better yet, what goes out!

      Love, Ann

  3. Oh Ann, I love Red+Black and I recently wore it too. You look great in this outfit fabulous Ann and it is perfect for Valentine’s Day. Your skirt and boots are amazing!

      1. Hee … my mom decided at some point in the 70’s that mint green and chocolate brown was a thing and I remember especially one wild outfit …. a brown turtleneck and tie-dye mint green hip hugging bell bottoms! It probably would’ve been more cool if I still didn’t have lots of baby fat, plus greasy hair. This summer when I have more time I’m totally going to try to put together a post of Dawn Lucy’s greatest hits (and awful misses) through the years!

        1. That outfit sounds wonderful! And the added description of greasy hair and a chubbier DL sounds equally appealing! Kids are so cute including their raw humanity. Know what I mean? I can just see it. That outfit and the cutie in it! Well, no wonder it’s a fave color combo from when you were a kid. Thanks for coming back to share Dawn Lucy! A x

  4. I love this outfit Ann! The skirt and boots are beautiful. I remember an outfit from 3rd grade…purple velvet hot pants with a white shirt and a long brocade vest over top. I thought I was da bomb when I wore it! And that probably explains my love of purple, and layering long vests and shirts/dusters over top of things (which weirdly enough I wrote about it today’s post). 🙂

    1. DA BOMB! Oh, we do love anything that makes us feel like DA BOMB! Thank you for that throwback terminology. Love it!!

And, Debbie. You’re so right: you do wear a lot beautiful purple and lovely vests. Your childhood sneaking in. That outfit from 3rd grade sounds irresistible!

      Love, Ann

  5. Ann that first photo of you is GORGEOUS!!! You look absolutely radiant and yes, red and black does look great on you. I love the description of your outfit from when you were young, I can remember specific outfits too!

You’ve reminded me of the outfit I wore to see A-ha in concert aged 14 (1986) with my best friend: A black roll neck top, a black and red (yay!!) tartan mini skirt, and thick woolly red tights. It was at the Hammersmith Odeon in London (any Brit will recognise the name of that venue) and we went on our own, though my parents dropped us off outside and picked us up afterwards.

We had such a good time and both felt so grown up – what a great memory you’ve triggered!! Thank you for hosting, will see you at #iwillwearwhatilike in the morning…!! 😉

    1. YOU SAW A-HA!! Oh man!! So lucky la!!! (“La” is an added sound added to statements like this to show more endearment over here in HK;) And that outfit and memory with your best friend sounds amazing! How was the concert?! I’m glad I helped to trigger a childhood memory. What a fun one!!

      Love, Ann

  6. Ahhhh, memories!
    Thank you Ann.
Black and red was my school uniform…and I have to admit to liking it!
Black tube skirt, with a double ruffle at the hem (it was the late 80’s).
Oversized heavy cotton shirt, tucked in and bloused over.
    Black brogued pumps.
Black, silver, red striped tie (tied with the skinny bit on the outside)
    Red cropped mohair cardigan.
    Waist-length henna coloured hair.
Black canvas satchel, covered in badges and tippex-graffiti.
    Hot damn I was cool!
    Hahahahaha.
    {BTW….I was not very “cool” actually…more awkward and a late developer}
I only had one set of uniform (2 shirts) and I cherished it.
Red and black is a fabulous combination.
And you have added more special Annie-style with those fringes and tassels.
I love that first shot of you!
Your eyes are full of joy….so beautiful.

    1. That school uniform ROCKS! Man, mine was nothing like that!! (Although I do love plaid probably because of my schoolgirl skirt….)

Thank you for the eye compliment! Makes me feel good.

Here’s to black and red and the style memories that accompany it! Annie

  7. I love seeing those two colours together and realise I have never ever worn anything featuring those two colours together. It’s just one of those combinations which look fresh and cool regardless of season which, in my opinion, looks particularly killer when White is thrown into the mix. Like what Greetje did. Love!!

  8. I don’t do red and black myself Ann. but you carry it off so well. I love all the fringing – truly over the top in the best possible way. And I can understand why you were inspired to go out to buy some red trousers after seeing these. They’re fab!
