Black Shirt Dress with a Red Trench – Ping Pong Post No. 2

Black Shirt Dress 3

I’m ping pong posting again–this time with a black shirt dress. Remember last month when I featured this cool plaid cape-like coat? (I should say tartan–as it hailed from the UK, and that’s how they say “plaid.”) This time around, Anna from Anna Island Style sent her black shirt dress to both Samantha from Fake Fabulous and me. I chose to add a little color with my red trench. Which by the way, I had always wanted, but it wasn’t until I chose the right color for me, that I felt comfortable wearing a trench. The classic khaki colored one makes me look a little ill! I adore sparkle so I added it to my top and bottom the the sequin beret and glitter booties. To pull just a little bit of the white from the black shirt dress I let my little lace white socks peek through. The final touch that coordinates all the colors together was my découpage black bag that I made myself from some fabric and a vintage clutch. This is just my interpretation…scroll on to see two more very different stylings of this black shirt dress.

I love the way Anna decided to just open up this dress up and wear it like a cardigan. I have a feeling if she wore it normally, it would just drown her svelte figure. Instead, with this open look accompanied with all sorts of print mixing, her figure is phenomenal! Even if Anna has or does not have hips, the cut of the open dress knocks them away. I love how styling clothes in certain ways can give us women a figure. Case in point. Anna looks sensational!!

This lady is a gal after my own heart. I mean for starters, look at the shoes! I can’t seem to get enough of runners these days, so pairing this shirt dress with these casual sneaks equals perfection to me. The other tiny but statement making addition that I love is that necklace. Being a Pisces, I adore anything fishy–even if it’s a skeleton of a fish. It’s just cool, and Sam’s necklace is edgy. Hoops and a crossbody bag and I kind of feel like I’m looking at myself! (Well she’s tinier, but you can see what I mean!) This styling screams off duty, hangin’ out on the weekend, I’m cool, so let’s hang out! I’ll hang with you Sam!!

How would you style this black shirt dress?

Black Shirt Dress 1

I really am curious….how would have you worn this shirt dress. Would you add color, would you dress it up or down, would you style it in some personal way that’s different than the norm? I’m curious, and I want to know, so please, do share!!

  1. Love the touch of red & sequins to this dress Ann!! In real life, I’d almost assuredly add in some color—especially since everything goes with black & white! And again you’re adding in those socks—I may have to copy that soon—it brings back so many great memories (remember the video by ZZ Top “Legs”?)
I did mention to Anna & Samantha that we all must be thinking alike as I have a shirt dress series going out in 3 weeks!

    1. Oh wow! We’re all on the same page!! I pretty much say yes to red a lot. It’s like, I’ll try to be all subtle and chic cool, and then boom, insert RED. It kind of cracks me up. Like why can’t I just go sleek. Why do I always have to add red? I mean I don’t always, but I do A LOT! Whether it’s a red lippy or a red clutch. Must be my loud voice trying to push through! Hahah! I’m the librarian that gets shushed! Haha.

And I love that ZZ Top song!! Of course I remember it!!

Thanks for your fun comment Jodie. You got me thinking…..

      Love, Ann

  2. First of all, I agree with a khaki colored trench. The color makes me look washed out too! Second super cute dress! The possibilities on how to wear it are endless! Since I am still running after two kiddos I would dress it down. A simple gold necklace and a pair of white sneakers to offset the dressiness of it! A crossbody bag and some bright colored sunglasses would be how I style it!

    1. So you’d go with Sam–perfect! That styling you just described sound perfect! Do you have a shirt dress? It is the perfect staple no doubt.

Thanks for stopping by and commenting Ruth!

      Love, Ann

  3. I love this project the three of you have going on! You all look great! It’s so much fun to see how each one of you styles the item!

I just love the details of your outfit! The red trench adds a great pop of color. And how fabulous are your shoes, socks, & the cute bag?

    1. It is really fun Andrea. I’m always so curious as to how each of us will style it. We’ve done it twice so far, and we’re all so different. I love that!

Thank you for your lovely compliments. Love, Ann

  4. Ann, you are beautiful in this dress!
I knew it would be so “you” as soon as I opened my parcel.
A great quality and a really nice drape.
I had my suspicions that a little red would sneak in somewhere….I imagined a great lip and maybe an under-top or red skinnies. Your red trench was a surprise, and a pleasant one at that!
Can you get anything and everything made-to-measure in HK?
I love the idea of that!

    1. Yep, you can get pretty much everything made here in Hong Kong, but it will be very pricey. It’s up in China that it’s much, much cheaper. So, in fact, I’m contemplating designing some things and giving it a shot at selling my creations. Crazy notion huh? But why not!!?

You know me so well regarding the RED. I just can’t seem to help it!! Hhaha.

What a fun shirt dress to style, right? Love, Annie

  5. lovely accessorizing, you rock it!!, love your sequined beret and shiny booties, love your Red trench (so much better than beige!) and love your unique bag, which really give it a twist!. You look elegantly chic but also relaxed and comfortable, and that’s what I love particularly!
I think I would wear something similar to Anna’s outfit, black&white mixed patterns (with a touch of red, for sure!)
    besos

    1. Thank you so much Señora Allnut! Your comment is so kind. Makes my day!! I’m glad to hear you also add touches of RED! It’s such a fabulous, vibrant color. Love, Ann
